Pre-LCI vs LCI: What BMW's Facelift Means for Parts

Short answer: LCI stands for Life Cycle Impulse, BMW's name for the mid-cycle facelift, usually three to four years into a model's production. Parts that commonly change at LCI include headlights, tail lights, bumpers, grilles, displays and some electronic modules. Your production date tells you which version you have.

How to tell if your car is pre-LCI or LCI

  1. Find your production date on the label in the driver's door jamb.
  2. Look up the LCI changeover date for your chassis code (it is usually a specific month, not a model year).
  3. Or decode your VIN with a BMW parts catalog, which shows the correct parts for your build.

Model year alone can mislead, because the changeover often happens mid-year.

Parts that commonly change at LCI

  • Headlights and tail lights: new shapes or LED designs that often do not plug in to earlier cars.
  • Bumper covers and grilles: revised shapes, sensor positions and air inlets.
  • Navigation displays and head units: screen sizes and iDrive generations often change.
  • Instrument clusters: some models moved from analog to digital clusters at LCI.
  • Engine and drivetrain: some engines were updated or replaced at LCI.

Parts that usually carry over

Many mechanical and hidden parts carry over unchanged, such as many suspension components, axles, door internals and structural parts. Always confirm with the part number rather than assuming.

How our listings show it

When a part is specific to one version, our listing title or condition notes say so, for example "PRE-LCI ONLY" or "LCI ONLY". If a listing does not say, match the part number or send us your VIN.
