BMW Chassis Codes Explained: E, F and G Series

Short answer: a BMW chassis code is the internal name for one generation and body style of a model. The letter roughly marks the era: E codes are older generations, F codes cover roughly the 2010s, and G codes are the current generation. Used parts are usually listed by chassis code because parts are shared within a generation, not across them.

How to find your chassis code

  • Decode your VIN with a BMW parts catalog or VIN decoder.
  • Check your registration or service records.
  • Match your model and year against the reference below, keeping in mind that generations overlap model years.

Why it matters for used parts

Parts are often shared across body styles in the same generation (for example many F30 and F32 parts interchange), but rarely across generations (an F30 part generally will not fit a G20). Within a generation, watch for the LCI facelift. See pre-LCI vs LCI explained.
