BMW Sound Systems Explained: HiFi, Harman Kardon and Bowers and Wilkins
Share
Short answer: BMWs came with a base system, a HiFi system (option 676), a Harman Kardon system (option 688) or, on some models, a Bowers and Wilkins system (option 6F1). Amplifiers and many speakers are specific to the system, so identify yours before buying.
How to identify your system
- Look for badges on the speaker grilles. Harman Kardon and Bowers and Wilkins systems are usually badged.
- Check the option codes in a VIN lookup: 676 HiFi, 688 Harman Kardon, 6F1 Bowers and Wilkins.
- Find the amplifier. Base systems may not have a separate amplifier. HiFi and premium systems do, often in the trunk or under a seat.
Why it matters
- Amplifiers are system-specific and may need coding.
- Speakers vary in size, impedance and mounting between systems.
- Door panels on premium systems can have different speaker grilles. See door panels.
Upgrading with used parts
Upgrading from base to a premium system usually means more than swapping an amplifier. Wiring, speakers and coding all change, so plan the full parts list before you start.
