BMW Part Number Supersession Explained

Short answer: supersession means BMW has replaced an old part number with a new one. A newer superseding number usually fits the cars the old number fit, but the reverse is not always true. When the numbers differ, check BMW's supersession history for your VIN before buying.

How to read a BMW part number

A full BMW part number has 11 digits, usually written in groups, such as 63 11 7 XXX XXX.

  • The first two digits are the main group (for example 63 is lighting, 61 is electrical, 11 is engine).
  • The next two digits are the subgroup.
  • The last 7 digits identify the part itself. This 7-digit number is what most sellers, including us, put in listing titles.

Why BMW changes part numbers

  • A design update or fix for a known failure.
  • A supplier change.
  • Consolidating several versions into one part.
  • Software or hardware changes on electronic modules.

When a different number fits

If your old part's number has been superseded by the number on the part you're buying, the newer part is generally the approved replacement. If the part you're buying has the older number, it may or may not fit, especially on electronic modules where the newer version may require newer software.

Some listings also include an interchangeable part numbers or superseded part numbers field. Check those fields when they are present.

Where part numbers can mislead

  • Electronic modules: two modules with the same hardware number can carry different software. Coding usually resolves this. See which parts need coding.
  • Painted and colored parts: the base part number may match while the color differs. Check the paint or trim code in the listing.
  • Left vs right: left and right versions usually have different numbers, sometimes only one digit apart.
