BMW Index 12 Injectors Explained (N54 and N63)
Share
Short answer: the index is the revision level of BMW's piezo direct injectors used on engines such as the N54 and N63. Index 12 is the later revision and is the version most owners look for. When buying used injectors, check the index printed on the injector body and plan to code the injector calibration values to the DME.
What the index number means
BMW revised its piezo injectors several times to improve reliability. Each revision carries an index number printed on the injector. Higher index numbers are later revisions.
Why index 12 is sought after
Earlier revisions developed a reputation for leaking and misfire complaints, and later revisions addressed many of those issues. Index 12 is widely regarded as the preferred version and is what many owners upgrade to when replacing injectors.
What to know before buying used
- Read the index on the injector body, and check the listing photos.
- Calibration coding: each piezo injector has a calibration code. After installing, the codes should be entered in the DME for each cylinder so the engine runs correctly.
- Buy as a set when you can. A matched set from one engine keeps revisions consistent.
- Replace seals and hardware per BMW's procedure when installing.
